Azura Literacy (orginally called 12 Books) was started in 2014 to improve literacy among elementary students in Mesa by distributing free books for summer reading. Since its inception, the program has expanded the free distributions in Title I schools and includes a free reading mentor program for students struggling with literacy. Studies show that access to books, frequent practice, and enjoyable exposure to reading are essential for children's literacy development and success in school. By providing this support, Azura Literacy gives disadvantaged children a greater chance of success.
Unlocking Potential, One Page at a Time
Children living in poverty who are not proficient in reading by the 4th grade are 13 times less likely to graduate high school than their proficient peers from higher-income homes.
Children in poverty are disproportionately affected by low literacy, and in Mesa, most elementary schools are Title I, with more than half of their students from low-income families. On average, only 31% of 3rd graders in Mesa's Title I schools are proficient in reading.
